The picture is a prototype I presented to the church design committee last evening...They loved it and we are now going forward and making and installing 80 of these...There are 2 changes I will make...They did not like the bocote inlaid cross...They are still deciding between bloodwood, purpleheart and wenge...Also, I want to change the stain...This stain brought out the grain too much and we want to only have a subtle grain...This is 6/4 red oak.
The challenge on this project will be efficiency...That is something I don’t usually worry about.
This is a perfect project for a track saw...There are 8 straight cuts and I will make templates so that the track is in the same place on each cut for each piece...We’ll initially cut the 6 curves with a band saw and then make them more accurate with a router and template.
I’ll take them to a local cabinet builder and run them through their big sander.
I’m going to drill 2 vertical holes in the bottom and build a stand with doles sticking up...This will allow me to set the panels upright for finishing.
If I am efficient, I estimate this will take about 90 minutes per panel (120 hours)...Anyone want to come over and help?
